The Community Observer Scheme can give approved participants a structured opportunity to observe aspects of policing.
Safeguards
Observation is subject to eligibility, confidentiality, safeguarding, information-handling and operational restrictions. Participation does not confer police powers.
What observation involves
An approved observer opportunity is designed to improve understanding of policing by allowing a participant to observe defined activity under supervision.
Operational limits
Police officers remain responsible for operational decisions. Observation can be paused or ended where safety, privacy, safeguarding or operational need requires it.
Confidentiality
Participants must follow the information-handling and confidentiality conditions attached to the scheme.
Taking part
HIOWC publishes the eligibility, application and practical arrangements when an observer scheme is accepting participants.
Current opportunities
Only opportunities shown on Vacancies are open for application. An information page does not mean recruitment is open.
