Direct detective entry combines appointment as a Police Constable with structured investigator development when HIOWC opens that route.
The role
Detectives investigate crime, gather and assess evidence, interview victims, witnesses and suspects and build cases for criminal justice outcomes.
Police officer foundation
A direct-entry detective is still appointed as a Police Constable and must complete the police officer learning and operational development required by the entry route.
Investigator development
The route adds structured investigator learning, supervised casework and assessment before independent investigative competence is confirmed.
Working as a detective
Investigative work can involve competing enquiries, vulnerability, disclosure, evidence handling and contact with victims, witnesses, suspects and partner agencies.
