Police Community Support Officer

PCSOs are a visible part of neighbourhood policing, working with communities, identifying local concerns, providing reassurance and supporting problem solving.

The role

PCSOs are police staff, not Police Constables. Their duties and designated powers are those assigned to the role.

Working with communities

The work centres on visibility, engagement, prevention, reassurance and local problem solving.

Applying

The vacancy states the working pattern, location, eligibility, selection and training requirements.

Day-to-day work

PCSOs spend much of their time in neighbourhoods: talking with residents and businesses, identifying recurring concerns, supporting problem solving and providing a visible policing presence.

Powers and responsibility

PCSOs use only the powers designated to their role and training. They work with Police Constables and police staff but remain a distinct police staff role.

Skills for the role

Communication, judgement, patience, accurate recording, confidence with the public and the ability to work with different communities are important.

Training and development

HIOWC provides the learning and supervised development required before a PCSO carries out duties independently.
